πŸ”₯ Nobody Expected This

When Masters of the Universe was tracking at $25 million opening weekend against a $200 million budget β€” with bad pre-release messaging, Jared Leto as the villain, and general scepticism from a franchise that had never successfully translated to cinema β€” the narrative was simple: expensive disaster incoming.

Then the review embargo lifted. Then the film opened. And somewhere between those two events, He-Man got the Power of Grayskull working again.

πŸ“– The Story

Prince Adam is separated from his magical sword at age 10 and stranded on Earth β€” growing up entirely unaware of his true destiny as He-Man, champion of Eternia. The discovery of his identity as an adult, his return to his home world, and his confrontation with the world-destroying force of Skeletor forms the film's three-act spine. It is clean, propulsive, and emotionally honest in a way the pre-release messaging completely failed to communicate.

🌟 What Works

Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man is the film's greatest success. He brings warmth, vulnerability, and a quiet nobility to Prince Adam that makes the transformation into He-Man feel genuinely earned rather than cosmetically applied. The character has never been more human β€” or more worth rooting for.

Jared Leto as Skeletor is the performance nobody expected. Theatrical, menacing, occasionally genuinely frightening β€” and possessed of a dark humour that gives the villain a specific, unpredictable energy. This is not the Joker situation everyone feared. Leto has found a register for Skeletor that feels right.

Idris Elba β€” as always β€” makes every scene he is in significantly better than it would otherwise be. There is a supporting role midway through the film that he transforms into the film's most unexpectedly emotional moment.

Travis Knight's direction is assured throughout. The man who made Bumblebee understands that franchise spectacle works only when you care about the person inside the armour. He never loses sight of that.

⚠️ What Doesn't Work

The film's first act β€” establishing Adam's life on Earth β€” drags. We spend longer in the "ordinary world" than the story needs, and the pacing only finds its footing once Eternia arrives and the scale opens up.

The villain's plan β€” world destruction as motivation β€” is the most generic possible choice for a franchise trying to establish fresh mythology. Skeletor deserves a more specific, more personal grudge than the film gives him.

And Camila Mendes, despite being singled out in every positive review, is given less to do in the third act than the first two suggested she would have. Teela deserves a sequel that puts her fully at the centre.

πŸ“Š Box Office

πŸ“…πŸ’°
Opening Weekend Domestic$38–42 Million
Opening Weekend Worldwide$85–90 Million
Budget$200 Million

Better than the dire tracking projected. Not the franchise launcher Amazon MGM needed. The film will need exceptional holds and strong international legs to justify sequel development. The critics helped β€” the audience reaction was genuinely positive β€” but $40 million domestic on a $200 million investment requires a long, sustained run to justify confidence.

πŸ’¬ Audience Reactions

πŸ’¬ "I came in sceptical about Jared Leto and left genuinely impressed. He understood the role." πŸ”₯ πŸ’¬ "Nicholas Galitzine is He-Man. End of discussion." πŸ’ͺ πŸ’¬ "Better than the trailers suggested. Travis Knight knows how to do this." βœ… πŸ’¬ "First act drags but once they get to Eternia it's genuinely spectacular."

πŸ“Œ Verdict

🎯 Masters of the Universe is a better film than its box office tracking suggested and a lesser one than its best moments promise. Nicholas Galitzine is excellent. Jared Leto surprised everyone. Travis Knight directed with genuine craft. The franchise has a foundation worth building on β€” if the numbers give Amazon MGM the confidence to try. By the Power of Grayskull β€” He-Man lives. βš”οΈ ⭐⭐⭐½
